Time, inflated into art. That is how Hublot presents the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, and for once the tagline is not an exaggeration. This is a watch that looks like it was blown up with a pump and then dipped in chrome — and I liked it enough to buy one. I went for the silver version: it is the only one of the three made in stainless steel, and to me that makes it feel more special.

Art Meets the Classic Fusion
Hublot has worked with artists for years, but this is a different level. Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog is one of the most recognisable sculptures of our time, and instead of simply printing it on a dial, Hublot and the Koons studio spent around two years reworking the entire Classic Fusion in that language. Everything that is normally flat and sharp on a Classic Fusion is here rounded, domed and mirror-polished, as if the watch itself were a balloon.
There are three versions, each limited to 200 pieces: red and blue in anodised aluminium, and silver in polished stainless steel. You can read more in the Monochrome first look, the SJX hands-on and on the official Hublot page.
The Unboxing
The experience starts with the box. The lid carries a mirror-finished Balloon Dog in relief, with a discreet Hublot × Jeff Koons underneath — it is an object you will want to keep on a shelf, not in a cupboard.

Why Silver, Why Steel
The red and blue are fun and very Koons, but they are aluminium. The silver is the only one in stainless steel, so it has a bit more presence on the wrist and the polish has that deep, liquid look that only steel gives you. It is also the most versatile of the three: no colour of its own, it simply borrows whatever is around it.
The case is 42mm wide and 11mm thick, with 50m of water resistance. The famous H-shaped screws on the bezel are still there, but with "inflated" domed heads. The crown is shaped like a balloon's inflation valve in soft grey rubber, and at 10:30 there is a small flexible rubber tail — the knot of the balloon. It is a completely useless detail, and it is my favourite one.

A Dial That Is a Mirror
The dial is polished and puffed like the rest of the watch, with domed hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova, the Hublot logo, Jeff Koons' signature and a date at 3 o'clock. Look closely at the seconds hand: the counterweight is a tiny Balloon Dog.
What the photos show better than any description is how the dial changes all the time. Under trees it turns green, under an open sky it becomes a deep blue, and in front of a flag it goes almost cream. You never really see the same watch twice. Legibility is better than you would expect from a mirror, thanks to the raised markers and hands.

Strap & Clasp
The strap is grey rubber with a debossed metallic insert that continues the inflated theme — from a distance it reads like a polished steel bracelet, but it wears with the comfort of rubber. The steel deployant clasp is signed Hublot and gets the same rounded treatment.

The Movement
Inside is the automatic calibre HUB1710, which is based on the Zenith Elite — a slim, proven and genuinely good movement from within the LVMH group. It is only 3.7mm thick, beats at 4Hz, has 27 jewels and a 50-hour power reserve. Through the caseback you see anthracite bridges and a polished, rhodium-plated rotor that has been given its own inflated shape. For an art watch, where the movement could easily have been an afterthought, this is a serious choice.
On the Wrist
It wears very well. 42mm is a sweet spot for the Classic Fusion, the 11mm height slides under a shirt cuff, and the rubber strap makes it comfortable all day. It gets noticed, of course, but people smile when they see it, which is not something I can say about every watch I own.
And naturally, I had to take it to meet the family.

Final Thoughts
This is a strong launch from Hublot. Marrying art with watchmaking often ends with a logo on a dial; here the art is the watch, with a truly unique design and a good calibre behind it. It is a great watch that is completely outside the box, and in steel it feels like the one to have.
